Having kids in a private school, we found the downside to this this winter break. While all the other kids went back to school Monday, ours don’t go back for another week and a half. So I had to go searching the Internet for things to keep them entertained for at least another week. Thanks to Martha Stewart, I found the perfect thing that will keep them entertained for days. I have made the homemade play dough before but it was always the one color. This recipe will allow you to make any color you want for a variety.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon cooking oil
  • Food coloring of your choosing

Instructions:

1) In a heavy saucepan, combine flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Add oil, 1 cup water, and food coloring as desired.

2) Cook over medium heat for 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until mixture pulls away from sides of pan.

3) Remove from heat, and let cool 1 minute. Transfer to a work surface, and knead until smooth.

4) Store in an airtight container; it will keep for several weeks.

Note: This clay is not for children under 1 year of age; due to its high salt content, children should be discouraged from consuming it.
