Now that fall is on its way, the weather is starting to get a lot wetter here, so I definitely need something fun to occupy the kids’ time when they can’t go outside!! The next project we want to try is making crystals from borax. It seems fairly easy to do (though we can’t speak from experience) and you can find a number of tutorials on how to do it. My son first read about it in his “Dangerous Book for Boys” where they suggest using alum, and I’ve found a couple of tutorials on the web for using Borax laundry booster! Here is the tutorial from about.com, where they suggest using pipe cleaners to form a snowflake. Of course the possibilities are endless, and you can make any shape that will fit in a jar. The “Dangerous Book for Boys” even suggests using sharp edged stones to give it a more natural look. I can’t wait for the next rainy day to try this out!

It is fun! I did it twice in elementary school – once with epsom salts, and once with sugar. This is how they make rock candy. It was a good science lesson…I’ll never forget that that’s when I learned the definition of the word “saturate.”
