“Butt Banging” Backpack

by sharon on June 6, 2008

I was planning to make one of these great backpacks for my daughter. When it was completed, I asked her to try it on, to check the length of the drawstring. She told me that she would rather have it a bit longer. I laughed at her, as she was asking me to make it so that it hung just about 4 inches below her waist. So, I said, “You mean you want it where it will be banging your butt all day?” (That would drive me crazy!) Thus, the “Butt Banging Backpack” was born!

Whether you are headed to the library or the beach, this lightweight
drawstring backpack is the perfect carry-all.

Don’t want to carry your purse?

Just toss your essentials in this pack,
sling it on your back, and off you go!

Here’s what you need:

1. straight pins

2. grommets w/tool

3. cutting mat/cutting wheel/ruler

4. fabric pieces cut to 15” x 19”

5. 11 ft of polycotton cording

Here’s what you do:

1. Fold down one short end ¼”

2. Press.

3. Fold down again 1”.

4. Press.

5. Do the same to second fabric piece making sure to match perfectly.

6. Unfold edge and turn in ¼”, then refold and pin. Do the same at opposite side. Sew seam across, close to edge fold, forming casing for cord.

6. Repeat for second piece.

7. Clip seam just below fold.

7. Repeat for remaining edge seams.

8. Sew side edges, beginning at edge of fold seam and continuing all the way around to matching edge on opposite side. Clip corners. Turn.

9. Attach grommets in bottom corners of bag

10. Cut cording into 2 equal lengths.

11. Take one length of cording and feed through both casings so that ends are protruding from one end and other end has loop through both casings. (See pic.)

12. Feed ends through grommet and tie a knot to secure.

And “voila!” you have just completed
your very own drawstring backpack!

What a great gift! For even more

Cool idea. My daughter had one similar last year when we went to Disney and I thought it was just the greatest thing, very light to carry. I will definately have to make me one.

Thanks
