Handmade Baby Diaper Wipes

serged-edge-cloth-diaper-wipes

Lately I’ve been interested in all things reusable. It’s nice to know that you can reuse something instead of throwing it away, which helps the environment as well as can save you money. Since I’m having a baby in just a few months, I think a lot about cloth diapers versus disposables, and cloth baby wipes versus cloth ones.

I am not a talented enough sewer to make my own cloth diapers, but I decided I could tackle baby wipes. So I found a pretty decent tutorial for diaper wipes, and I went out and bought myself some fabric. I decided to go with terry cloth on one side, and flannel on the other.

I chose an off-white for the terry cloth (It was either that or bright white, and I figured the bright white wouldn’t look that way for long after wiping a baby’s bum…), and I picked a bright, cheery green flannel for the other side.

The tutorial looks super easy. All you do is choose your wipe size - either 4"x8" or 8"x8" and then use a zigzag stitch or a serger around the edges. I think I’m going to use my friend’s serger to make the wipes look a little nicer.

The next step is to choose your own homemade wipe formula, and you’re set! I’ll post the finished product in a couple of weeks (assuming they turn out ok!) :)

Scrapbooking tip using with ribbon

Tuesday
May 27,2008

Hi, My name is Betty and I love to scrapbook and try new ideas, different tools and techniques. I am posting one of my favorite tips because I use alot of ribbon and this idea saves money because you use your own ribbon and add whatever words you want.

This idea will save you money when it comes to buying those special ribbons with the sayings on them. Just buy the plain ribbon, Twill and Grossgrain works the best, it comes in different colors but I like the white and natural colors the best. Then use your computer and any word processor or graphic photo type program and type what ever you want with what ever font you like. Then print it out on your paper, this will serve as a guide for placing your ribbon. Now use a non permanent tape runner and run a strip of tape on the back side of the ribbon, this will hold it in place while you run it thru your printer. Take the ribbon and tape it exactly over the words that printed on the paper. Be sure it is straight. Now just print on your printer. This is so fun, you won’t have to look for that perfect saying any longer, you just print your own.

Since winter has come to New Zealand I have been inspired to start crocheting again. So what better way to start then to have a look around the net and see what great patterns have come out for some inspiration. Here are some links I wanted to share with you:

  • First of all you have to go and have a look at PlanetJune’s blog here she has been crocheting up a storm over the last couple of weeks. And you can not really resist these adorable amigurumi.. Have a look around at all the other patterns June writes (some are freebies!) when you are here.

  • Another awesome free project can be found here on Little Projects blog. It is a purse organiser so you can stop rummaging for your lip balm, cellphone, keys, change for parking, cards etc and get organised. Its a quick crochet pattern after that just pop it in the washer a couple of times ans taaddaaaa!! Have a look around this blog while you are here there, Jo sells some awesome crochet patterns for bags. The one below is my favourite.
  • Some of you might have already seen this one featured on other blogs but I am so in love with Brie’s work, her blog is called Roman Sock and you can find it here. She has promised to write us a pattern/tutorial about this amazing Acorn so better go and leave a comment.

I hope this got you really inspired to do some crocheting this week. Don’t forget to post a picture in our Flickr Group or for some more inspiration go and join the the Crochet Along they have a new theme every 2 months starting and you are welcome to join anytime.

Lettuce Play

sea lettuce

Here is a picture of “Sea Lettuce” - Ulva lactuca- The delicate fronds are only 40 microns (two cells) thick. A small green alga with a broad, crumpled frond that is tough, translucent and membranous, it is attached to rock via a small holdfast. I think it is quite lovely.

My friend Jennie came to the Borders Knit Group in the autumn wearing a lovely frilly scarf based on this wavy, rippling plant. I made one for myself and have worn it lots, and it always gets compliments. So I decided to make some more as gifts.

The pattern is incredibly simpleIM002510, and I have just finished my fourth. Three shown here, as one went to sister-in-law Marion for her birthday. They look really attractive when worn, only take 2 balls of yarn - and if you plan to give them as a gift, you can roll them up prettily so they really do look lettuce-like! The recommended yarn is Twilleys ‘Freedom Spirit’ [which is what the orangey brown unrolled scarf is in] but the other two were both some Phildar DK I had in my stash.

100g DK wool, pair of 4mm needles [or a 4mm circular needle, which I use because it all rolls up neatly and fits in my handbag, and also because if I am knitting in the car, I feel safer with a shorter flexible needle] The pattern comes out as a strip with one side a strip of plain knitting, and the other half has a frill to it. Jennie’s pattern had a bobble bit to the edging - but I missed that out, because it looked lumpy when I knitted it!

SEA LETTUCE SCARF
